For those of you who are friends with me on Facebook, you might have noticed that I posted a link called The Scale of the Universe 2. This website takes you on an interactive journey from the smallest thing theorized to exists (the 'strings" of string theory) to the end of the observable universe. In case you didn't see it, here it is.
According to String Theory, these strings are one dimensional, but vibrate in all the other dimensions. So, what exactly is string theory?
Picture a guitar. Now picture just one of those strings on the guitar. Now think of that string as having been tuned by having it stretched and held in tension across the guitar. Depending on how much tension is in the string, and how the string is plucked, will determine what types of notes are played. These notes could be said to be excitation modes of the guitar string under tension.
The same with string theory: the elementary particles that are observed in particle accelerators could be thought of as the “notes” or excitation modes of these elementary strings/particles. In string theory, the string must be stretched under tension to become excited (just as in playing a guitar). Unlike a guitar, the strings in string theory are floating around in space-time. These strings are so small, that they are impossible to see with our current technology. Then how do we know they exists? We don't, really; except through mathematical equations. However, it was these same equations that predicted the Higgs Boson, and it was found through the work of a particle collider. These strings are theorized to be 0.00000000001 yoctometers. For those of you who aren't familiar with a yoctometer, let's just say that to call this thing "tiny" is an understatement. Such a small length can't even be comprehended.
The God of the strings is also God of the stars. From our sun, to the immense giant VY Canis Majoris- though huge to us, to the one who formed them, they are but dust. And though we cannot see past the edge of the observable universe, and though we will never be able to travel there, God is there. He is there, filling it with His presence. He knows what is in the Eridanus Supervoid, and He is in control of the Great Attractor. Creation is a grand symphony, ever proclaiming the greatness of God, whether viewed through a microscope or telescope, or when discussing things that boggle the mind. God. Is. Grand.
However, not only is He in control over all these things, He created them all- the Higgs Boson and the photon, the nebulae and galaxies. All of these are His handy work, crying out to us the glory of God. Creation tells us that God is here. It tells us that the One who can create such vastness and be in control of it all is worth entrusting our lives to. It tells us that One so intricate as to create the strings of String Theory, can be trusted to take care of every minute detail of life. So what is it that you are worried about today? What uncertainties are you facing? If God so governs the plucking of the strings and the expansion of the universe, will He not take care of you, oh ye of little faith? When we look at creation, we are constantly reminded that there is nothing to be anxious about, because God is God of the strings and the stars.
