1) Memorize scripture. If we want our children to hide God’s word in their heart, we need to help them memorize it. Pick a verse to memorize each week. Obviously, you need to make it age appropriate. If you have younger kids, give them verses that have to do with the gospel, creation, sin, repentance, and forgiveness. This is even a good place to start with older children.
2) Add singing. Pick a song from a worship cd or that you have downloaded on itunes. Listen to it and sing it together. If you have younger kids, you can make this fun by dancing around and making up hand motions.
3) Get theological. I have been taking my kids through the Jesus Storybook Bible. However, we are at the point to where they are ready for more. Therefore, I am getting ready to take them through the children’s version of the Gospel Project, along with the Case for Christ for Kids. If you have teenagers, find out what topics or books of the bible they are interested in, get a study, and work through it together. If you want some recommendations on good studies or books, just ask me and I will gladly point you towards some.
4) Fast together. This is something I am looking forward to doing one day with my kids. Honestly, our kids aren’t quite there yet when it comes to this, but through our teaching and training (and the grace of God) we will do it one day soon. This is something you want to do preferably with older children and teenagers who understand this concept and the reason behind it. Maybe it is fasting and praying for something in the life of your family? Maybe it is fasting and praying for someone else? Whatever the issue, this is a good way to knit the hearts of your family together in the Holy Spirit and emphasizing the importance of drawing near to God.
So, if you are looking to take your family worship to the next level, start to implement some (or all!) of these things.
