Why is it so important? It is important for many reasons. First, it is part of the character of God. Second, it is the very foundation of the New Covenant. Third, it is the basis of salvation. Fourth, it is the basis of sanctification. Fifth, it is the basic essence of the Christian life in how we interact with others, raise our children, and view all of life. Grace is pervasive.
In this series of articles, we will look at five various aspects of grace.
1. Covenant of Grace
2. Common Grace
3. Saving Grace
4. Sanctifying Grace
5. Empowering Grace
Before we begin, we need to first define what grace is. Grace itself is an attribute of God that flows forth from his goodness and good pleasure. It is part of his moral nature. Therefore, grace is an expression of God’s goodness towards those who deserve only punishment. This means that grace in no way can be earned or merited. It is a gift that flows from the goodness of God’s nature. This also means that God is free to express it as he sees fit, and free to bestow it on whomever he pleases. Because grace is a free act of benevolence, it means that God was under no obligation to extend it to anyone. Yet he does; which makes it all the more amazing. As this series unfolds, we will unpack the meaning of this doctrine as it relates to the five areas listed above.
